OTFC #03 Watching a Movie

Description

PLEASE READ: I am taking the 30-prompt OTP challenge fav.me/d5dn7ex and CHANGING it to be "OTF"--"one true family," not "one true pairing." Hopefully it's obvious that Scotty and my OC, Orin, have a COMPLETELY INNOCENT, father-and-daughter-type bond, but I just wanted to make that extra-clear here. Most of the themes on this challenge are G-rated and can apply to parent-and-child relationships just as easily as romantic (and I thought they were just too cute to pass up, hence me jumping on the challenge bandwagon :aww:), and the few that aren't, I of course will be finding innocent substitutes for.

+++EDIT+++

Okay, maybe The Dark Crystal was a poor choice on this one... I'm sorry guys, I didn't mean for it to look like a potential trauma for Orin... see, this pic was based on a similar incident from my own life, where my mom and I had neither one seen this movie and didn't really know what we were in for. And like I said in some of my comments, don't worry too much about Orin--Scotty is being a good daddy and covering her face and holding her close whenever he sees something start getting too creepy on the screen. And at least it's not an R-rated movie or anything (he'd never let her see one of those!)... anyways. I imagine that as a new parent in my own little world, Scotty is sometimes a little in over his head, and things like this happen by accident... but he knows the best thing for him to do is just show a lot of love and everything will be okay. :thanks:

Day 03: Watching a Movie

It had been a nice, quiet, uneventful day on the Enterprise as the crew continued with their month-long survey of the Beta Pleaides quadrant. Work was completed on-schedule, and officers and ensigns alike had ample time for personal enjoyment after their shifts.

Scotty had never really watched movies that often before adopting Orin, but he was quickly discovering that he liked doing so. Especially when he had his happy little bairn there by his side, cuddled close under the covers before her bedtime, watching the projector with gentle contentment.

"What'll it be tonight, Bairnie?" Scotty asked in mild curiosity, noticing the new film chip Orin had produced from one of her drawers.

"The Dark Crystal. Mr. Sulu showed it to me. He says it's an old Terran movie." That made sense--Orin was fascinated with shows and films from old Earth, and Scotty was quite happy to go along with this, of course being comfortable with the history of his own planet, and able to explain things to Orin the few times she missed a cultural reference.

"Hmmm, Ah'm not sure, Lassie--Ah've heard this one was a little scary," Scotty pursed his lips just slightly as he turned the chip-cover over in one hand. This particular movie wouldn't have worried him had Orin been twelve, or maybe even ten, but as she was only seven.... Scotty may have been the age of a typical grandfather, and bore the mellowness of his years, but suddenly being an adoptive parent now, his overprotective instincts inevitably kicked in. He was just being a good daddy.

"Pleeeeeease?" Orin gave the old Scotsman her signature baby-doe-eyes and wibbly lower lip.

Scotty relented, shaking his head with a chuckle. "Och, all right, Lassie. Ye just promise tae stay close, an' I'll hug ye tight whene'er things get too fright'nin'."

Orin cuddled at her guardian's side. "Will you hug me whenever things are nice and normal and happy, too?" she grinned sweetly, her little arms already reaching out for his.

"O *course* I will, Darlin'," Scotty chuckled again as he pushed the video chip into the mini-projector, and quickly suited his actions to his words.

Yeah, #02 was already about cuddling, but... I think at least half of these 30 are going to end up all nice and huggy and snuggly! :iconawwloveplz: "The Dark Crystal" got picked as the random movie for this story because I bought it to watch and screencap a few weeks ago, so it was on my mind. And I also thought it fit well for a movie that wouldn't be HORRIBLY unsuitable for a seven-year-old to watch (maybe mildly, but not horribly), yet at the same time WOULD still probably require Scotty to play the "Shh, there there, I gotcha, I gotcha--those mean vulture-y beasties can't hurt ya..." comforter role to Orin in several scenes. :giggle: Aww...

PS: I know virtually nothing specific about astronomy, so if the "Beta Pleiades quadrant" doesn't exist in either real life or Trek lore either one, please forgive me... I just made up that combination of words off the top of my head... :ashamed:

Aww, Scotty is so sweet to care for dear Orin! :aww:
