Description

PLEASE READ: I am taking the 30-prompt OTP challenge fav.me/d5dn7ex and CHANGING it to be "OTF"--"one true family," not "one true pairing." Hopefully it's obvious that Scotty and my OC, Orin, have a COMPLETELY INNOCENT, father-and-daughter-type bond, but I just wanted to make that extra-clear here. Most of the themes on this challenge are G-rated and can apply to parent-and-child relationships just as easily as romantic (and I thought they were just too cute to pass up, hence me jumping on the challenge bandwagon :aww:), and the few that aren't, I of course will be finding innocent substitutes for.

Day 29: Sweet Dreams (the original prompt was "Doing Something Sweet," so again, it was sort of a "free square" as far as the specifics go. :))

"Hmmmhmmmhmmm... there! Now eat the rest of your cake, little Cornflake. One more nibble!..."

Orin was humming contentedly and hugging her little bunny doll, cajoling it to "eat" a bite of the miniature plastic cake she was holding. Scotty smiled over the edges of his technical journal as he watched her.

Along with installing a little trundle-bed beneath his own in the cabin, the old engineer had realized that one of the most urgently-needed items for his new "bairnie" was a couple of toys. He had taken care of that during the Enterprise's very next planetary stop after the resuce on Dinar V. Landing party duty was not often something assigned to Scotty, but he had requested it this time, and had wandered over to a small traveler's rest store on the tiny moon settlement of Felda. Felda was really nothing more than a mining town of mostly-Terran immigrants, a sort of "pit stop" for the freighters and starships passing through. Scotty had luckily managed to find a shelf or two of toys alongside the snack packages and repair kits in the station shop. So he had bought Orin a stuffed pink bunny, a plastic cake and tea set, and a strange little ball that spun like a top and turned different colors (apparently a local invention). It wasn't all that much, really, Scotty realized, and he was a bit worried that those three toys would not be enough for the little girl until he got a better opportunity to buy her some more. But all his worries had been laid to rest by Orin's heartfelt squeals of gratitude and even tears of joy, when he had returned to the ship with the trinkets in hand. Scotty had forgotten that his poor new bairn had gone without any toys at all for over two months during her imprisonment on Dinar. He had almost started crying himself, but then switched to gently-stifled chuckles as Orin named the rabbit doll after their breakfast that morning--cornflakes.

This evening she was trying to get Cornflake to eat all the cake, as usual. Scotty leaned over from where he was reading on his bed, and reached down his wee lassie and her doll.

"Careful ye dunna give 'er TOO much t' eat, me wee darlin'," the old Scotsman chuckled, rubbing Cornflake's plush belly gently with his knuckles. "She might get a tummyache! An' that might give her bad dreams!" (Orin had learned her own lesson about this by downing two-and-a-half helpings of dessert one night.)

"I know, but sometimes Cornflake's a naughty bunny an' eats too much anyway," Orin giggled, her eyes twinkling sweetly but rather impishly up at her guardiain. Was there a double edge to that remark? Scotty wondered, stifling another chuckle as his eyes traveled over to his particularly well-fed stomach. Then he glanced at his desk chronometer. "Bedtime noo, Lassie," he announced, dimming the cabin lights. "Put up yer wee cake set, an' ye an' Cornflake go on an' get yer shut-eye."

Orin did as she was told, but then surprised Scotty by pushing her little pink doll up against his mustache bristles. "Kiss Cornflake g'night so she won't have bad dreams, please Unca Scotty?" she cooed hopefully. "J'st like you do f'r me?"

Scotty patted Cornflake's head thoughtfully. "Well, I reckon th' magic kisses have t' come from YOU fer her, Bairnie. Ye're her wee mother, after all!"

Orin promptly kissed Cornflake's cheek, but then pushed her up towards Scotty again. "Okay, I did dat, Unca Scotty! An' you're her gran'pa now, so you have t' kiss 'er too!"

Scotty chuckled again and gave in to his "bairnie's" logic. "Och, all righty then," he smiled, and planted a kiss between Cornflake's fuzzy ears, with an audible smooch-y noise. Orin fell about giggling in her covers, and Scotty grinned.

"Sweet dreams, Lassie," he whispered, bending over to tuck Orin in and plant an even sweeter kiss upon her cheek.
