(I'm so glad I got this finished on time! :phew: I've been in such a slump lately, for various reasons, not to mention I think I've gotten the flu this week... but I just had to make a biggish picture for an occasion like this. :)) On September 8th, 1966, a certain sci-fi TV show premiered... many of us (including myself) weren't even born then, but Star Trek has endured for a whole half-century now, to entertain and inspire several generations. I chose to draw the original crew here, since they're the ones I've been most involved in watching and making fanwork of myself--but still, I figure what I'm about to say can apply to any of the various Star Trek series that have grown with time.

What has made this franchise so enduring?

First of all, of course, we have the characters--almost any "Trekkie" has a particular crewmember who feels special to him or her, as a comfort or a role model or a "fictional friend," or someone to identify with. And the characters' interactions with each other are frequently heartwarming, exemplifying friendship and loyalty to some of the strongest degrees seen in fiction.

And of course, let's not forget the imagination! Who wouldn't enjoy "exploring strange new worlds" and "seeking out new life and new civilizations," complete with hi-tech ships and gadgets to boot? Sci-fi in general appeals to our curiosity, but Star Trek makes that the starting point of the whole show! (Oh, and yes, we can't forget the ending phrase to complete those other two, now can we?... *clears throat* "TO BOLDLY GO WHERE NO ONE HAS GONE BEFORE!")

Thirdly, many commentaries have been made about the social issues Star Trek took on. It promoted ideas of equality and understanding, as I'm sure we've all heard, so I'll let that speak for itself. And I think it's noteworthy that Star Trek was--and is--one of the few sci-fi franchises that is very optimistic in nature, rather than dystopian. In our mortal realm, we may never really reach the gleaming, harmonic outlook that Star Trek did... but it still gives us something to dream about, and perhaps work towards in small ways, in society or just in our own lives. (Compassion, bravery, and learning were all very big themes in TOS, I know that much! :))

So... anyways. I'll shut up now. Live long and prosper and happy golden anniversary, to Star Trek and its fans everywhere!
